Our Site: a website by and for women and girls with disability
In the week of International Women’s Day 2020, Women With Disabilities Australia (WWDA) launched its new website made by and for women and girls with disability – Our Site. The ‘Our Site’ website was developed to support women and girls with disability to learn about and realise their rights.
“Our Site can showcase to young women and girls with disability, that they can be anything, they can achieve anything. That is often missing in our lives – our own roles, our own examples of who we want to aspire to be like.” – Our Site Panel member
There are currently over 2 million women and girls with disability in Australia and they represent one of the most marginalised and excluded groups in the country. They experience widespread discrimination and violations of their rights and freedoms.
The development of Our Site demonstrates what active and meaningful participation of women and girls with disability looks like in practice. Over a period of 18 months, over 100 women and girls with disability across Australia contributed to the website and as a result, have a sense of pride and ownership over the site.
“I don’t think I’ve ever come across anything to do with disability that has not been top down imposed. It is really exciting that this is our product. Our community owns it.” – Our Site Panel member.
The Our Site website is full of of practical and accessible information and resources to support women and girls to access their rights. It also showcases a range of real stories which reflect the diversity of our community.
